CHEMetrics Chemets self-filing reagent ampoules are a great way to test for dissolved substances in liquids. These visual test kits allow you to obtain results by measuring the color of the sample according to the color comparators provided with the kit. While traditional methods often require multiple steps and thorough preparation, these test kits allow you to obtain dependable results with a few simple steps. By simplifying the testing method, Chemets test kits reduce the potential for operator error. Additionally, each of the ampoules contained in the test kits is vacuum sealed which helps eliminate the problem of obtaining inaccurate results from stale or unstable reagents. These reagents are stored right in the tip of each ampoule and sealed in glass, thereby minimizing direct contact with the chemicals.

Method:

The K-4605 CHEMets Visual Kit is a visual indicator kit for measuring formaldehyde in water levels from 0-1 and 1-10 ppm.  This device uses the Purpald Method for testing. Purpald^® is subject to fewer interferences than Schiff's reagent or chromotropic acid procedures. A purple-colored complex is formed when Purpald in alkaline solution reacts with formaldehyde. Results are expressed as ppm (mg/L) CH₂O.

Shelf-life of the Purpald Reagent: five months. We recommend stocking quantities that will be used within four months.

1. Fill the sample cup to the 2 mL mark with the sample to be tested. Add 6 drops of the A-4201 solution and stir. Add 4 drops of A-4202 solution and stir.	2. Place the Vacu-vial ampoule tip-first into the sample cup. Snap the tip and the ampoule will automatically fill.
3. To mix the ampoule, tilt it from side to side, allowing the bubble to travel from end to end.	4. Dry the ampoule and wait 12 minutes for color development.
5. Place the ampoule into the center of the round comparator and hold it toward a source of light, viewing from the bottom. Rotate the comparator until the color below the ampoule shows the closest match.	6. For higher concentrations, use flat comparator. Place the ampoule between the color standards, moving it along the comparator until you can determine the closest match.
