What is Acid Gas?
Acid gas is a term used to describe natural gas or gas mixtures that contain significant quantities of various acidic gases, including hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, hydrogen halides, and similar compounds. When these acidic gases dissolve in water, they form acidic solutions. To make raw natural gas, which contains hydrogen sulfide or carbon dioxide, suitable for use, it must undergo treatment to reduce impurities to acceptable levels. This purification process is commonly achieved using the amine gas treatment method.
Health Risks Associated with Acid Gas Exposure
The health risks associated with exposure to acid gas depend largely on which gas concentrations are elevated above normal levels. Here are some key health risks:
- Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S): This gas is highly toxic and can be deadly even at low concentrations. It is also corrosive and can cause cracking in various types of metals, limiting the materials suitable for piping. Symptoms of exposure to H2S include headaches, dizziness, nausea, and, in severe cases, loss of consciousness and death.
- Carbon Dioxide (CO2): While carbon dioxide is a natural component of the atmosphere, elevated concentrations can be harmful. High levels of CO2 can lead to symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, visual and hearing dysfunction, and unconsciousness within minutes to an hour. Extended or severe exposure to carbon dioxide can be lethal.
- Nitrogen Oxides (NOx): These compounds are irritants and can cause significant lung damage. Prolonged exposure to high levels of nitrogen oxides can result in respiratory problems and, in extreme cases, death.
