Why Choose CHEMetrics Chemets kits?

CHEMetrics Chemets self-filing reagent ampoules are a great way to test for dissolved substances in liquids. These visual test kits allow you to obtain results by measuring the color of the sample according to the color comparators provided with the kit. This unique method allows you to attain results quickly and accurately with minimal contact with potentially hazardous materials.

Safe and Reliable Results:

While traditional methods often require multiple steps and thorough preparation, these test kits allow you to obtain dependable results with a few simple steps. By simplifying the testing method, Chemets test kits reduce the potential for operator error. Additionally, each of the ampoules contained in the test kits is vacuum sealed which helps eliminate the problem of obtaining inaccurate results from stale or unstable reagents. These reagents are stored right in the tip of each ampoule and sealed in glass, thereby minimizing direct contact with the chemicals.

Method:

The K-4815 Glycol CHEMets Visual Kit is a visual indicator kit for measuring glycol in water levels from 1-15 and 10-150 ppm.  This device uses the Purpald-Periodate Method for testing. In the colorimetric chemistry, periodic acid oxidizes ethylene glycol and/or propylene glycol to formaldehyde, which reacts with Purpald in alkaline solution. Test results are expressed as ppm (mg/L) ethylene glycol. To convert results to ppm propylene glycol, multiply by 2.

Ethylene glycol and propylene glycol are the primary ingredients in commercially-available antifreeze. They are used with various corrosion inhibitors to protect metal surfaces in cooling water systems. CHEMetrics glycol kits are used to monitor potable waters for glycol contamination originating from glycol in cooling systems. They are also used to detect glycol in stormwater effluent and airplane deicing operations and to monitor glycol recycling operations.

Shelf-life of the Purpald Reagent: five months. We recommend stocking quantities that will be used within four months.

1. Fill the sample cup to the 20 mL mark with the sample to be tested. Add 4 drops of Activator Solution A-4400. Cap sample cup and shake to mix contents. Wait 5 minutes then add 6 drops of Solution A-4401 and 4 drops A-4402. Cap the sample and shake to mix. 2. Place the ampoule tip-first into the sample cup. Snap the tip and the ampoule will automatically fill.
3. To mix the ampoule, tilt it from side to side, allowing the bubble to travel from end to end. 4. Dry the ampoule and wait 12 minutes for color development.
5. Place the ampoule into the center of the round comparator and hold it toward a source of light, viewing from the bottom. Rotate the comparator until the color below the ampoule shows the closest match. 6. For higher concentrations, use flat comparator. Place the ampoule between the color standards, moving it along the comparator until you can determine the closest match.
