The K-4710 Hydrate Alkalinity Kit was designed to accurately measure the alkalinity levels in water from 100-1000 ppm. K-4710 uses an acid titrant with pH indicatorHydrate alkalinity is a component of total alkalinity. Boiler operators must maintain relatively high hydrate alkalinity levels when phosphate cycle treatments are used to ensure the formation of softer, more easily removable deposits. This specific test for hydrate alkalinity provides a more accurate value than the calculation methodFor hydrate alkalinity, CHEMetrics developed a titrimetric method that uses a hydrochloric acid titrant with a phenolphthalein indicator. The end point of the titration occurs at pH 8.3. Barium chloride is added to the sample to prevent interference from carbonate and bicarbonate alkalinity. Results are expressed as ppm (mg/L) NaOH.

The alkalinity of water is a measurement of its buffering capacity. Alkalinity of natural waters is typically a combination of bicarbonate, carbonate, and hydroxide ions. Sewage and wastewaters usually exhibit higher alkalinities due to the presence of silicates and phosphates. Alkalinity inhibits corrosion in boiler and cooling waters. It is also measured as a means of controlling water and wastewater treatment processes or the quality of various process waters.

What's included:

  • 30 Ampoules with valve assemblies
  • Indicator Solution
  • Neutralizer Solution
  • Titrettor
  • 25 mL Sample Cup
  • Instructions

How to use:

  1. Add 20 mL of sample into the empty sample cup. Fill the sample cup to 25ml

  2. Add 8 Drops of Neutralizer solution.
  3. Add 1 drop of Indicator Solution. Stir gently. If sample does not turn pink, hydrate alkalinity is 0 ppm.
  4. *For samples that turn pink, wait 2-5 minutes
  5. Snap the tip of the ampoule at the black snap ring.

  6. Lift the control bar and  insert the Titret assembly into the Titrettor.

  7. Hold the Titrettor with the sample pipe in the sample. Press the control bar firmly, but briefly, to pull in a small amount of sample. Contents will turn PALE PINK. Wait 30 seconds.
  8. Repeat, mixing the assembly between each sample draw.

  9. Tip the vacu-vial back and forth to mix
  10. Press the control bar again and mix the ampoule. Watch for color change from COLORLESS to PALE PINK
  11. Repeat until the change to PALE PINK is permanent to remove the ampoule and obtain results.
