The K-1513 Vacu-vials Ammonia Test Kit is a direct replacement for the discontinued K-1503 Vacu-vials test kit.

The K-1513 Ammonia Vacu-vials® Test Kit (Nesslerization) comes in a cardboard box and contains everything needed to perform 30 tests: thirty Vacu-vials® ampoules, Stabilizer Solution, 25 mL sample cup, 3-mL syringe, ampoule blank, and instructions. Ammonia concentrations between 10 and 150 ppm can be determined using the 3-mL syringe and dilution instructions included.

This kit requires the use of the V-2000 or V-3000 Photometer, an A-2024 SAM Photometer, or a spectrophotometer capable of accepting a 13 mm diameter round cell. Instrument sold separately.

This test kit can be used to measure the concentration of ammonia in seawater or saltwater by using the A-1503 Accessory Solution Pack (sold separately).

K-1513 is offered as an alternative to the discontinued K-1503. K-1513 offers the same Nesslerization method, but with a modified testing procedure to allow for wider measuring range and longer shelf-life.

Safe and Reliable Results:

While traditional methods often require multiple steps and thorough preparation, these test kits allow you to obtain dependable results with a few simple steps. By simplifying the testing method, Vacuvials test kits reduce the potential for operator error. Additionally, each of the ampoules contained in the test kits is vacuum sealed which helps eliminate the problem of obtaining inaccurate results from stale or unstable reagents. These reagents are stored right in the tip of each ampoule and sealed in glass, thereby minimizing direct contact with the chemicals.

Method:

K-1513 uses the Direct Nesslerization Method. The Direct Nesslerization Method employs the Nessler reagent* which is commonly and reliably used to test for the presence of ammonia. This method works well for measuring ammonia concentrations in drinking water, clean surface water, good-quality nitrified wastewater effluent, and seawater. In some waters, calcium and magnesium concentrations can cause cloudiness of the reagent. Adding a few drops of stabilizer solution (Rochelle Salt) will prevent this cloudiness. References recommend distilling samples prior to analysis. Results are expressed as ppm (mg/L) ammonia-nitrogen, NH₃-N.

Shelf-life: Although the Nessler reagent is stable, its high alkali content attacks the glass ampoule. The resulting precipitate interferes with color comparison. We recommend stocking quantities of CHEMets® and VACUettes® ampoules that will be used within twelve months. A two-month supply of Vacu-vials ampoules is suggested. Refrigeration will dramatically extend the shelf-life of these products.

How to Use:

1. Fill the sample cup to the 25 mL mark with the sample to be tested.	2. Add 2 drops of the Stabilizer Solution. Stir to mix the contents of the cup.
3. Place the Vacu-vial ampoule tip-first into the sample cup. Snap the tip and the ampoule will automatically fill.	4. To mix the ampoule, tilt it from side to side, allowing the bubble to travel from end to end.
5. Dry the ampoule and wait 2 minutes for color development.	6. Insert the Vacu-vial ampoule into the photometer, flat end first, and obtain a reading in ppm.
