K-6003 Iron

K-6003 Iron Vacu-Vials Kit is used to determine soluble and total Iron levels from 0-6.00 ppm.

Iron Information

This kit requires the use of a CHEMetrics Direct-Readout Photometer or a spectrophotometer capable of accepting a 13 mm diameter round cell. Instrument sold separately.

Why Choose Vacu-vials?

CHEMetrics Vacu-vials self-filling ampoules are a great way to test for dissolved substances in liquid. Unlike our visual test kits, the Vacu-vials test kit allows you to obtain an instrumental result using the CHEMetrics Direct-Redout Photometers or any spectrophotometer capable of accepting a 13m diameter round cell. When using equipment from another manufacturer, set the spectrophotometer to absorbance mode, select the wavelength specified by the Vacu-vials kit instructions, and follow the test procedure. The K-6003 Iron Kit was designed to accurately measure the levels of total and soluble iron in water from 0-6.00 ppm.

Safe and Reliable Results

While traditional methods often require multiple steps and thorough preparation, these test kits allow you to obtain dependable results with a few simple steps. By simplifying the testing method, Vacuvials test kits reduce the potential for operator error. Additionally, each of the ampoules contained in the test kits is vacuum sealed which helps eliminate the problem of obtaining inaccurate results from stale or unstable reagents. These reagents are stored right in the tip of each ampoule and sealed in glass, thereby minimizing direct contact with the chemicals.

What's included:

  • 30 self-filling Ampoules
  • 1 25 mL Sample Cup
  • Activator Solution
  • Ampoule Blank
  • Instruction Manual

K-6003 uses the Phenanthroline Method. With the Phenanthroline method, ferrous iron reacts with 1,10-phenanthroline to form an orange-colored chelate. To determine total iron, thioglycolic acid solution is added to reduce ferric iron to the ferrous state. The reagent formulation minimizes interferences from various metals. Results are expressed as ppm (mg/L) Fe.

Iron is present in nature in the form of its oxides, or in combination with silicon or sulfur. The soluble iron content of surface waters rarely exceeds 1 mg/L, while ground waters often contain higher concentrations. The National Secondary Drinking Water Standard for iron is 0.3 mg/L, as iron concentrations in excess of 0.3 mg/L impart a foul taste and cause staining. High concentrations in surface waters can indicate the presence of industrial effluents or runoff.

How to use:

1. Fill the sample cup to the 25 mL mark with the sample to be tested. 2. Add 2 drops of the Stabilizer Solution. Stir to mix the contents of the cup.
3. Place the Vacu-vial ampoule tip-first into the sample cup. Snap the tip and the ampoule will automatically fill. 4. To mix the ampoule, tilt it from side to side, allowing the bubble to travel from end to end.
5. Dry the ampoule and wait 1 minute for color development. 6. Insert the Vacu-vial ampoule into the photometer, flat end first, and obtain a reading in ppm.
