The K-6010 Iron Kit was designed to accurately measure the levels of total and soluble iron in water from 0-1 and 1-10 ppm. K-6010 uses the Phenanthroline Method. With the Phenanthroline method, ferrous iron reacts with 1,10-phenanthroline to form an orange-colored chelate. To determine total iron, a thioglycolic acid solution is added to reduce ferric iron to the ferrous state. The reagent formulation minimizes interferences from various metals. Results are expressed as ppm (mg/L) Fe. 

Iron is present in nature in the form of its oxides, or in combination with silicon or sulfur. The soluble iron content of surface waters rarely exceeds 1 mg/L, while ground waters often contain higher concentrations. The National Secondary Drinking Water Standard for iron is 0.3 mg/L, as iron concentrations in excess of 0.3 mg/L impart a foul taste and cause staining. High concentrations in surface waters can indicate the presence of industrial effluents or runoff. 

1. Fill the sample cup to the 25 mL mark with the sample to be tested. 2. Place the ampoule tip-first into the sample cup. Snap the tip and the ampoule will automatically fill.
3. To mix the ampoule, tilt it from side to side, allowing the bubble to travel from end to end. 4. Dry the ampoule and wait 1 minute for color development.
5. Place the ampoule into the center of the round comparator and hold it toward a source of light, viewing from the bottom. Rotate the comparator until the color below the ampoule shows the closest match. 6. For higher concentrations, use flat comparator. Place the ampoule between the color standards, moving it along the comparator until you can determine the closest match.
