Method:
The K-8510B Phosphate Kit was designed to accurately measure the levels of Phosphate in water from 0-120 ppm and 120-1200 ppm. K-8510B uses the Stannous Chloride Method. Test kits employing this chemistry utilize a stannous chloride reduction. Phosphate reacts with ammonium molybdate and is then reduced by stannous chloride to form a blue complex. Results are expressed as ppm (mg/L) PO4.
Phosphorus occurs naturally in rock formations in the earth's crust, usually as phosphate. High phosphate concentrations in surface waters may indicate fertilizer runoff, domestic waste discharge, or the presence of industrial effluents or detergents. Although phosphates from these sources are usually poly-phosphates or organically bound, all will degrade to ortho or reactive phosphates with time.
Phosphate measurement is used to control scale and corrosion inhibitor levels in boilers and cooling towers. Both methods described below measure reactive phosphate, which will give a positive reaction prior to hydrolysis, and is usually termed ortho-phosphate.
How to Use:
1. Fill the diluter snapper cup to the -ml- mark with distilled water. Add two drops of Activator Solution. Cap the cup and shake to mix the contents. | 2. Fill the micro-test tube approximately halfway with the sample to be tested. |
3. Holding the VACUette almost horizontally, touch the tip to the contents of the micro-test tube. |
4. Place the VACUette between the vertical tip guides on the inside of the dilutor snapper cup and snap the ampoule tip. |

5. To mix the ampoule, invert it several times, allowing the bubble to travel from end to end. |
6. Dry the ampoule and wait 2 minutes for color development. |

7. Place the ampoule into the center of the round comparator and hold it toward a source of light, viewing from the bottom. Rotate the comparator until the color below the ampoule shows the closest match. | 8. For higher concentrations, use flat comparator. Place the ampoule between the color standards, moving it along the comparator until you can determine the closest match. |
