Why Choose Vacu-vials?
CHEMetrics Vacu-vials self-filling ampoules are a great way to test for dissolved substances in liquid. Unlike our visual test kits, the Vacu-vials test kit allows you to obtain an instrumental result using the CHEMetrics Direct-Redout Photometers or any spectrophotometer capable of accepting a 13m diameter round cell. When using equipment from another manufacturer, set the spectrophotometer to absorbance mode, select the wavelength specified by the Vacu-vials kit instructions, and follow the test procedure. The K-1503 Ammonia Kit is designed to accurately measure the levels of Ammonia in water from 0-7.00 ppm.
Safe and Reliable Results:
While traditional methods often require multiple steps and thorough preparation, these test kits allow you to obtain dependable results with a few simple steps. By simplifying the testing method, Vacuvials test kits reduce the potential for operator error. Additionally, each of the ampoules contained in the test kits is vacuum sealed which helps eliminate the problem of obtaining inaccurate results from stale or unstable reagents. These reagents are stored right in the tip of each ampoule and sealed in glass, thereby minimizing direct contact with the chemicals.

Method:
CHEMetrics' colorimetric method for determining total iron uses thioglycolic acid to dissolve particulate iron and to reduce iron from the ferric to the ferrous state. Ferrous iron then reacts with PDTS (3-(2-pyridyl)-5,6- bis(4-phenylsulfonic acid)-1,2,4-triazine disodium salt) in acid solution to form a purple-colored chelate. Results are expressed as ppm (mg/L) Fe.
Iron is present in nature in the form of its oxides, or in combination with silicon or sulfur. The soluble iron content of surface waters rarely exceeds 1 mg/L, while ground waters often contain higher concentrations. The National Secondary Drinking Water Standard for iron is 0.3 mg/L, as iron concentrations in excess of 0.3 mg/L impart a foul taste and cause staining. High concentrations in surface waters can indicate the presence of industrial effluents or runoff.
How to Use:
1. Fill the sample cup to the 25 mL mark with the sample to be tested. | 2. Add 5 drops of the Activator Solution. Stir to mix the contents of the cup. Wait 1 minute. |

3. Place the Vacu-vial ampoule tip-first into the sample cup. Snap the tip and the ampoule will automatically fill. | 4. To mix the ampoule, tilt it from side to side, allowing the bubble to travel from end to end. |

5. Dry the ampoule and wait 5 minutes for color development. | 6. Insert the Vacu-vial ampoule into the photometer, flat end first, and obtain a reading in ppm. |
